After the Revolutionary War, a significant landmark emerged along the wagon route that extended from Philadelphia, across the Appalachian Mountains, to what is now Pittsburgh. This route is currently recognized as East Pittsburgh Street. An inn established along this path catalyzed the formation of a small community named Newtown, centered today at the crossroads of Pittsburgh and Main Streets.

In 1782, a Seneca Indian raid, led by Guyasuta and aided by Canadian rangers, devastated Hannastown—then the seat of Westmoreland County located north of Greensburg. Consequently, by 1785, Newtown took on the role of the county seat. A year later, in 1786, the county erected a log courthouse on a parcel of land acquired from Christopher Truby and William Jack. This site has continually hosted every Westmoreland County Courthouse since then. The area surrounding the courthouse eventually evolved into the borough of Greensburg, named in honor of Revolutionary War General Nathaniel Greene, and was officially incorporated as a borough in 1799.

Throughout the early 1800s, Greensburg witnessed minimal growth. However, the scene shifted post-1850 as the town burgeoned around its status as a county seat, enriched with inns, burgeoning enterprises, and industrious residents. It became a vital railroad hub, and the subsequent discovery of substantial soft coal deposits nearby spurred a robust mining industry towards the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The borough of Bunker Hill, now known as the Fifth Ward, amalgamated into Greensburg in 1894. By 1905, Greensburg expanded further by incorporating three adjacent boroughs: Ludwick (now Sixth Ward), East Greensburg (now Seventh Ward), and Southeast Greensburg, colloquially referred to as Paradise (now Eighth Ward). This period also saw the construction of new housing across various sectors of the town. In 1918, Seton Hill College transitioned from St. Joseph’s Academy into a four-year institution for women. On January 2, 1928, Greensburg was designated as a Third-Class City. The post-World War II era marked additional residential development and an enhancement in cultural status with the opening of the Westmoreland County Museum of Art in 1959 and the establishment of the University of Pittsburgh’s Greensburg campus in 1963 (now situated in Hempfield Township).

During the 1970s, the emergence of shopping malls and new commercial centers on the outskirts led to a decline in downtown Greensburg, prompting the closure of major downtown stores. Despite this, the city became a hub for service industries, professional offices, and banking, revitalizing downtown Greensburg into a thriving commercial center, especially for smaller shops and a growing array of restaurants. Larger shopping facilities now dot the city’s periphery.

Today, Greensburg enjoys a balanced economic environment, characterized by light to moderate industry and thriving service sectors. The city benefits from a diverse economic base, which shields it from severe impacts during economic downturns. Housing development continues, particularly in the northern areas with projects like Saybrook Village and Evergreen Hill.

Education in Greensburg is managed by the Greensburg-Salem School District, with the Diocese of Greensburg overseeing an elementary and secondary educational system. Additionally, a variety of private trade schools offer educational services within the city.
